Fargo, a 1996 Coen Brothers film, starred Billy Bob Thornton (as Molly Solverson), Martin Freeman (as Bob Odenkirk) and Bob Odenkirk. Tolman was praised for her portrayal of Minnesota policeman Molly Solverson, with Vanity Fair noting her that she "calmly and undoubtedly took over the whole performance". Tolman was awarded the Critics' Choice Television Award as Best Supporting Actress in a Film/Miniseries she was nominated as Best Actress at both the Emmy Awards & Golden Globes for her role. It was also in the same year that it was announced that Tolman will make an role on the Mindy Project on the show as Abby Berman who is a romance writer. The actress was a supporter in Michael Dougherty's horror comedy film Krampus. Tolman did not want to play a number of support roles, such as roles that were played by wives, mothers and friends, following her first appearance in Fargo. Tolman wanted a distinct character. In 2017, Tolman starred in ABC's Downward Dog, based on the Animal Media Group web series which was cancelled after a single season. Tolman appeared in ABC's Emergence drama which premiered on 24 September 2019 but was canceled by ABC within a year, on 21 May 2020, even though Tolman posting on Twitter that the ratings were "pretty decent". In 2021 she was a guest star as Alma Filcott in the second season of the drama show Why Women Kill, and played Natalie Green in The Facts of Life portion of the third season of Live in Front of a Studio Audience.
